The Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) officially announced a new Board of Directors.
Henry Evans, the new MBN President, quoted, “In order to handle the changes required
with the rapid growth demands of our entire organization, it was felt we needed to
restructure the membership of our board members.” Continuing Evans said, “I felt we
should have representation from the various components of our MBN family so as to gain
input from teams, judges, and other experienced and qualified personnel.”
The new members have already had their first introductory meeting, and went away with
assignments and issues to be addressed later at another meeting October 10 at the Ducks
Unlimited HQ. Eddie Foshee, Vice President, said ”We are on a fast track to reschedule
a number of events that had been in need of more attention by us such as our MBNI, or
Championship invitational contest.” Our initial sponsors had recently dropped off and we
needed time to reorganize in order to set new dates which we will soon announce.”
The MBN sanctions over 30 contests across most of the Southeast with emphasis on pork
BBQ, Memphis style. There are only 3 main categories cooked in each event, whole
hog, whole shoulder, and ribs. The major premise of these contests is “Who cooks the
best BBQ here, today!” This is why there are onsite judges as well as blind judging to
gain every perspective of the cooking process. Additionally, there is a finals round to
ensure the Best BBQ is found. Such a cooking ordeal requires a lot of pork. The average
MBN contest cooks almost 2 tons of pork! One can imagine the size grills it takes to
barbecue that quantity of meat, and then there are the trailers and trucks to haul this kind
of equipment around the country.
